Referee Responsibilities

General information:

  • It is mandatory for you to attend either a Grade 9 or Impact Referee Clinic yearly to be certified to referee.
  • Read & review the referee responsibilities and referee section of the Recreation Handbook (pg19-31) prior to each season.
  • New referees will need to AR ( line) 4 games with our experienced referees. After they have completed their 4 games they can be second ref or referee U8 games. Referees must be at least one year older than the age group they are refereeing.
  • Once you have been scheduled to referee a game it is your responsibility to be at the correct field at the scheduled game time. If there are more referees than needed at a field, please call your coordinator to verify which referee is scheduled at that field. You will receive an e-mail reminder as a courtesy from your coordinator on Thursday of each week. Please verify that you have the correct location and time and send your coordinator a quick reply.
  • All games MUST be scheduled by an Impact United referee coordinator. Do not call another referee to take a game that you have been scheduled to referee.
  • Referee Cancellations: If it is past Thursday and you are scheduled to referee a game on Saturday of that week you are required to be at that game. If you can not referee that game you must contact your referee coordinator and speak to her directly. You can not send an e-mail, text or leave a voice mail. You will be expected to referee the game you are scheduled for until you have spoken with your coordinator.

Game Day:

  •  Prior to arriving at the field know the age specific times & rules for your game. Fill out all information on your signature card before arriving at the field.
  • Arrive at field at least 10 minutes prior game time and begin to check players in as soon as possible.
  • Check both teams in prior to game time. Inspects players’ shin guards (mandatory), footwear (no baseball or football cleats) and jewelry (medical alert bracelets only).
  • Games MUST begin on time. Teams can play short players and add players as they arrive. If a game starts late, shorten each half equally so that it will end on time and let each coach know how long the halves will be.
  • Games MUST end on time. If the game begins late, the game must end on time. Emphasis on game start and end times for U8, U9 & U10: These game times are scheduled one hour apart. They each have (2) 25 minute halves and a 5 minute halftime. This only gives you 5 minutes between games. Please make sure you end games on time, so the following game will start on time.
  • Be prepared with shirt, whistle, coin, watch or device for timing, water, referee quick-card, signature cards & pen/pencil.
  • Make sure signature cards are filled out completely with signatures from both coaches. You will not be paid for any incomplete signature cards turned in. Signature cards can be printed from here.
  • Be clear and direct with signals and calls
  • Keep all signature cards together to be turned in after the last game of the season to your coordinators house.
  • Center Referee: Each Saturday after game, please go to our website and click on the Referee Game Survey link and answer a few questions about your games that day.

End of Season:

  • It is your responsibility to drop of your signature cards to your referee coordinator on the day of your last game of the season. If we don’t receive them on that day they are late.  Do not turn in incomplete signature cards.
  • If your coordinator does not receive your signature cards or they aren’t filled out completely you will not be paid.

Contact Information:

You will be assigned to a referee coordinator. They will contact you once game schedules are done to get you scheduled to referee. If you have any questions, please contact your referee coordinator.
